Apple Screen Time is free, built in, and good at what it does: device downtime, per-app time limits, and app/age-rating restrictions across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The 2025 iOS 26 update even closed common bypasses.
But it operates at the wrong layer for YouTube. It can block the YouTube app, time-limit it, or remove it via age ratings — but it cannot filter channels, block individual videos, or touch in-app content. When YouTube is allowed, ads, recommendations, autoplay, and comments are all fully intact. Watchly provides the middle ground Apple cannot: a curated, ad-free library.
Apple Screen Time controls the YouTube app at the OS level only — block it, time-limit it, or remove it via age ratings (YouTube is 17+). It cannot filter channels, block individual videos, or affect in-app content, ads, recommendations, or comments.
