Every app that controls YouTube for kids, compared
There are dozens of ways to make YouTube safer for children — from allow-list players to whole-device monitoring suites to free tools built into your router. Here’s how they actually differ, and where Watchly Player fits, feature by feature.
Watchly’s own model is an allow-list plus AI: nothing plays unless a parent adds it, and an AI reviews every video against 21 safety themes rather than trusting an entire channel. It runs in any browser today, with a native Android TV app coming soon.
The four kinds of YouTube control
Every product falls into one of four buckets — and they differ most in their fundamental approach.
Allow-list players (Watchly’s direct rivals)
Everything is blocked by default; the child only sees what a parent approved. The tightest control, and the only approach that removes the algorithm entirely.Curated libraries
A walled-garden catalogue of hand-reviewed videos — safe, but your child usually can’t watch their specific YouTubers.General parental-control suites
Broad monitoring/blocking apps where YouTube is one of many controlled apps. YouTube handling is usually all-or-nothing.Built-in & network-level tools
Free tools inside Google, Apple, YouTube, or your router/DNS. Coarse control — content tiers, on/off, time limits — but no per-video approval.Allow-list players (Watchly’s direct rivals)
Everything is blocked by default; the child only sees what a parent approved. The tightest control, and the only approach that removes the algorithm entirely.

- ✓21 named themes, checked one by one
- ✓Read from what is actually said in the video
- ✓You still decide what goes in the library

Router & DNS-level options
A few tools work at the network layer rather than as an app. They’re blunt instruments — useful as a backstop, but none can approve individual videos or channels.
OpenDNS / Cisco Family Shield and a router’s built-in Restricted Mode force YouTube’s Restricted Mode via DNS across every device on the network — they can block YouTube outright, but offer no per-video control, no time limits, and no reporting. Bark Home pairs with the Bark app to add network-level scheduling and filtering, but still relies on Bark’s monitor-and-alert model rather than an allow-list.
Watchly takes the opposite approach: instead of filtering the firehose, it starts from an empty library and only ever plays what you approved.
of YouTube videos watched by kids 8 and under are made for older audiences.
No algorithm
No feed, no recommendation rail, no autoplay. Inside Watchly there’s nowhere else to go — just the library you built.
Zero ads
No pre-roll, no mid-roll, no banners, no sponsored anything. The video you approved plays — and nothing else.
