YouTube provides several built-in parental control options. Restricted Mode hides potentially mature content using automated filters. Even with YouTube's built-in controls enabled, parents run into the same problems. The tools are a starting point, but they leave significant gaps that a whitelist approach solves.
Automated filters cannot understand context the way a parent can. A video about the science of fire might be blocked while a clickbait video with a misleading thumbnail gets through. Restricted Mode and YouTube Kids both rely on machine learning that makes mistakes in both directions, blocking good content and allowing bad content.
Children are resourceful. Older kids learn to disable Restricted Mode, create new accounts, or use creative search terms to find content outside the filters. Even younger children stumble onto unexpected content through autoplay and recommendations. Reactive filtering will always be one step behind a curious child.
YouTube parental controls apply the same rules to the entire account or device. A five-year-old and a twelve-year-old get the same restrictions. There is no way to create age-appropriate libraries for different children or set different time limits based on each child's needs and maturity level.
Restricted Mode must be enabled on each browser and device separately. If your child uses a different device or browser, the restrictions may not apply.
